Stepping away from self is a smart move to get a better perspective of the issues at hand. Being too close can interfere with looking at all the angles of the same situation. Self distancing allows us time and space to analyse our thoughts and emotions. How we chose to create this distance is our choice. We can write about our thoughts, we can talk about them with a trusted friend or we can talk to a professional. As we take the thougths are out of our own head, we give the opportunity to the prefrontal cortex, the thinking part of the brain, to have a clear picture. A clear picture helps to highlight the details of the matter. We are then better equipped to analyse which part to adress first and think of the route towards sorting the matter. When we keep our thoughts inside, they tend to swirl and can create a storm which feels overwheling. When laid out in the open as a spoken dialogue or written note, it is easier to figure out what the problem maybe. When one has figured out where to go, the focus shifts to the planning and the doing. And of course that will benefit from self distancing again and the cycle contines.
